The Internal Communications Director reports to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs and Marketing and functions with a high degree of autonomy. The incumbent manages the functional areas of internal communications and high-profile executive communications for the UC Davis Vice Chancellor for Human Health Sciences and other executive leadership within the health system.
Duties include, but are not limited to, directing and overseeing strategic health system-wide internal communication programs, overseeing the development of internally-focused communication tools and content. The incumbent will partner closely with Davis Campus internal communications to bring relevant messages and content into Sacramento campus employee communications in ways that are customized and relevant to the Sacramento campus.
The Director of Internal Communications works closely with all executive leadership, including the Chancellor's executive team, to develop strategies for advancing the vision and message of the health system through communications by the Vice Chancellor, Dean of the School of Medicine, and other senior executives. Directs research to develop the strategy and framework for communications that contribute to and advance the focus and substance of ideas and plans for executive communications, especially those executive communications which are for internal (employee and student) audiences. Will seamlessly and selflessly partner with other Directors in the Department of Public Affairs and Marketing on cross-functional thinking and program development for the betterment of the health system overall.
Bachelor's Degree in Communication, Marketing or related field and/or equivalent experience, education and training.
Experience to write and edit clear, accurate, compelling and stylistically appropriate copy. Thorough knowledge of the English language and its proper usage in both oral and written communications aimed at a variety of goals and intended for diverse audiences. Excellent proofreading and copy editing skills are essential.
Experience using different media including Web, social media, video and traditional environments to communicate message and expand reach with varied audience.
Strong organizational and time-management skills to coordinate many details of multiple projects simultaneously, keeping everything on schedule and identifying and solving problems as they arise.
Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment with constantly shifting priorities. Must be able to meet tight deadlines and work long hours, when necessary.
Strong political acumen and extraordinary sensitivity to the perceptions and concerns of others, with the ability to craft communications that respond to political realities and stakeholder needs.
Proven ability to write persuasive, engaging speeches, testimony, talking points, and other orally delivered communications, effectively capturing speaker's "voice" and personal style, while consistently incorporating key strategic messages.
Strong computer skills to quickly and accurately prepare properly formatted documents, including a wide variety of text documents, PowerPoint presentations and business graphics, and to use and manage databases.
Demonstrated ability to write for various print formats, including numerous text-document formats, presentation formats (PowerPoint, posters, etc.) and Web communications.
Research skills to quickly and accurately gather information on a wide variety of topics and issues, using multiple on-line and other resources.
Analytical skills to interpret data and information, draw conclusions, and display data in such a way as to effectively support the positions taken in strategic public communications.
Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to represent the Office of the Vice Chancellor and the Office of Public Affairs in a professional manner in the conduct of highly visible work.
Skill and sound judgment to apply state and federal laws, university policies, and professional standards to executive communications that represent health system leadership.
5+ years of experience in managing and directing strategic communication.
Extensive knowledge and understanding of UC Davis Health's faculty, staff and trainees; clinical, research, education and outreach programs; organizational structure; and policies and procedures.
