The Manager, Education and Engagement ICARE Program provides leadership for innovative and relevant community-based cancer education and outreach programs through sustained community-capacity building activities. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to: planning, implementing and evaluating education and outreach programs focusing on inherited cancer predisposition for individuals contacting the InherIted Cancer Registry(ICARE) (including professional and lay groups), promoting the development of ongoing collaborations with healthcare professionals, proofing for data entry errors, preparing patient/participant documents for study visits, and assisting with the preparation and submission of documents to the IRB and study sponsors. The Manager serves as a liaison between faculty, staffand community stakeholders in order to meet programmatic, research and education goals; this requires highly developed communication, interpersonal and capacity-building skills. The Manager understands and utilizes systematic community educational planning principles, solid instructional design methods and community-based participatory planning methodologies.
Additionally, the Manager assists with the management of study data which may include preliminary basic statistical analysis as well as synthesizing relevant scientific literature. Responsibilities also include maintaining study timelines and progress with respect to IRB and study sponsors. The Manager is self-directed and works independently with little supervision to coordinate and oversee the activities of the assigned protocols. May assist with the training and orienting of new staff. Participates in clinical cancer genetics research, development and implementation.
Under the direction of Dr. Pal, the Manager, Education and Engagement of the ICARE Program will be devoted to providing leadership for innovative and relevant community- based cancer research, education and engagement programs by expanding and maintaining partnerships through the Inherited Cancer Registry (ICARE) Initiative. These activities may include utilizing the ICARE network to create additional opportunities for expansion of clinical services, as well as identifying other areas of potential growth for the program. Primary responsibilities include provider-based efforts, participant-based efforts, as well as efforts targeted to other stakeholders that build lasting relationships and facilitate the growth of ICARE. Examples of provider-based efforts include interfacing with providers who deliver cancer genetic counseling and testing services, in order to publicize ICARE-related outreach, education and research opportunities and serve as a clinical liaison to implement research efforts.
Participant-based efforts encompass addressing general questions from participants (in either English of Spanish, given there are participants in ICARE who are unilingual Spanish speakers) and facilitating information exchange with treating providers as needed and as appropriate; leading targeted recruitment efforts nationally and internationally for specific inherited genes (e.g., PALB2 , PMS2 , etc); and assisting with development of ongoing patient-centered materials including website and bi-annual newsletters. Efforts pertaining to other stakeholders include leading the interface with key strategic accounts, national organizations, and thought leaders in both the commercial and academic setting to drive the growth and visibility of ICARE initiatives.
The Manager will collaborate with VUMC marketing and VICC Office of Patient and Community Education to leverage resources and existing community partnerships to further ICARE and Dr. Pal's research efforts.
Skills set should include a well-developed knowledge of: systematic educational planning processes, community-partnership building, community programming, communication methods, organizational leadership skills and program evaluation. Position requires excellent communication skills, solid organizational and problem-solving capability; and a commitment to quality customer service. Must demonstrate flexibility, creativity, and be able to balance multiple tasks/activities to achieve project goals.
Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent experience) and 5 years relevant experience.
Master's degree in Genetics Counseling or related field. Board eligible/Board certified by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
Bilingual: fluent in both English and Spanish
Minimum 1 year experience in genetic counseling and/or education and outreach
