The Director of Donation Services position is a key member of the Lions Eye Institute for Transplant & Research (LEITR) Leadership team. The position is responsible for overseeing the day to day ocular and tissue service departments and donor services center (call center). The position exercises considerable independent and professional managerial knowledge in the continuous analysis and review of the departments’ operations to ensure compliance with LEITR’s Quality program, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) applicable Good Tissue Practices (GTP’s), American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) standards, Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA) Medical Standards, and other state and/or federal regulatory bodies. General direction is received from the Chief Operating Officer who holds the Director responsible for the achievement of LEITR’s authorization, screening and recovery operational goals and objectives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Supports the Mission, Vision, and Values of LEITR and exhibits a commitment to organ donation.
Oversees the training and performance of all ocular, tissue and donor services staff ensuring compliance with LEITR SOP’s.
Continuously maintains and improves the technical aspects of the eye and tissue recovery process.
Oversees all aspects of the Donation Service Center operations. Ensures all donation opportunities are maximized and that exceptional customer service is provided on a daily basis.
Maintains the quality of the eye and tissue screening, authorization and recovery process including compliance with regulatory agencies such as the FDA, Florida Agency for Health Care Administration, EBAA, AATB and any other organization with regulatory authority over the department.
Responsible for all policies and procedures relating to DSC and Recovery practices to maintain the highest quality surgical and research tissue available.
Assist with the preparation of the annual budget and financial development plan within the guidelines set forth by the organization. Assures that the ocular and tissue services department’s approved budget is adhered to in every respect.
Maintains and updates policies and procedure manuals for the ocular, tissue and donor services departments.
Provides continuity of information throughout the operational departments to improve efficiency and is available to staff and affiliates for technical and educational information.
Maintains adequate supplies and evaluates equipment on a periodic basis to provide safe efficient operations.
Maintains fleet maintenance including vehicle repair services.
Maintains a competent staff and assure that compensation and employee relation programs. and policies are consistent with normal management practices and regional trends.
Assures that all records and statistical data are maintained in accordance with proper procedure.
Makes recommendations regarding hiring, discipline, and promotion of subordinates; authorize leave and overtime; approves time and attendance; evaluates and rates employee performance.
Maintains confidentiality of all patient information according to federal and state guidelines and regulations.
Serve on Administrator on Call (AOC) as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in related field (or equivalent).
Work experience may substitute education requirements.
Minimum of five years of progressive management experience required.
Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in Medical industry Organ/Tissue or Eye donation required.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite of Products; i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, MS Project, etc.
Certified Tissue Bank Specialist (CTBS) or Certified Eye Bank Specialist (CEBT) required within 18 months of employment.
