Provides direct support to the Operating Room, Same Day Surgery, and all departments throughout the hospital utilizing instrument trays by decontaminating, reassembling and resterilizing dirty trays. Assists with ordering of supplies, orientation and training of personnel, acts as a resource person. An integral member of the surgical team who provides support for surgeons throughout the operation by preparing, providing and caring for instruments and equipment and maintaining a sterile field.
EDUCATION: High school diploma or G.E.D. required. Graduation from a school of Surgical Technology preferred
CERTIFICATION/LICENSES: Sterile Processing certification preferred. BLS certification required within 2 weeks of hire. Surgical Tech certification preferred but not required
Medical terminology required
Experience in the operation of ultrasonic washers, steam autoclaves, washer-sterilizers and washer-decontaminators required
Knowledge of care and handling of instruments and equipment
Knowledge of sterilization and cleansing procedures
Ability to read, write, and communicate verbally in English.
EXPERIENCE: One or more years experience in an acute care hospital setting in the operating room or an instrument care environment preferred.

Employee will be instructed in Universal Precautions and Right to Know. Employee will be expected to utilize all protective equipment available whenever there is a potential for exposure to infectious materials or hazardous chemicals. Cleaning, repair and replacement of this protective equipment will be furnished by the hospital. Utilizes available tools to prevent worker injuries.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Heavy physical effort requiring standing, walking or lifting most of the day. Requires ability to speak, hear and communicate verbal and written materials.
