Application Developer

Job Summary:

This position is for an expert software developer to work as part of a team that is providing analysis and design, in support of clinical research. The role will work to develop, create, implement features of web-based Electronic Data Capture (EDC) systems, and maintain data security and integrity while also contributing to database management and manipulation of survey data sets. This position will also be engaged in data and software management applications design and development, to support extraction, analysis and reporting of data.

Successful candidates will possess familiarity with core concepts, practices, and procedures in database design, programming, systems development, and software engineering (including, but not limited to, object-oriented techniques and languages, database principles and programming, and open-source methodologies). Basic familiarity with clinical processes and clinical terminology, data privacy practices laws as well as ability to learn new technology and practices are needed.

The Department of Biostatistics at VUMC was founded in 2003, tasked with the mission of bringing biostatistical expertise to the Vanderbilt community. Expected responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

• Interface with stakeholders to obtain design requirements
• Design and build databases in REDCap to facilitate capture of research data
• Design and build web applications that aggregate data from REDCap for analysis
• Seek feedback from others as necessary to ensure decisions do not conflict with business needs.
• Create routines for outputting health information data from systems into other analyzable formats.
• Develop data extraction, reporting, and analysis programs for the health information systems as needed.
• Use advanced problem-solving skills to troubleshoot a variety of issues.
• Use creative thinking to achieve goals and improve processes.
• Work with investigators, researchers, and the end users of the health information systems to maintain data security and integrity.
• Serve as a resource to team members.
• Collaborate with team members to ensure current and future needs are being met.
• Other duties as assigned.
• • Develops and modifies software under occasional guidance
    • When assigned a project or project component, is able to determine project/component needs, develop a plan for meeting those needs, and implement the plan
    • Has sufficient proficiency in programming to work independently in most cases, with need for occasional guidance in particular then learning new technologies or systems
    • Has experience and skill to work on large and complex projects
  • Debugs software and other code
    • Is able to systematically apply testing to identify source of software defect
    • Is able to implement coding fixes for medium to complex defects
  • Maintains comprehensive documentation
    • Provides documentation of code function in-line with code
    • Thoroughly documents defect testing steps and code implemented for resolution
  • Maintains data security and integrity
    • Understands related institutional and governmental policies and guidelines
    • Performs all programming in light of these policies and guidelines

Additional Information:

This is a full-time position.

Salary is dependent upon education and experience.
