The Manager - Performance Improvement is responsible for the oversight of and alignment of multiple distinct functions within the Performance Improvement department including large strategic value streams, flow initiatives, the organization's daily management system (DMS), affordability, continuous improvement, goal deployment, and the Lean Healthcare Conference at Stanford. The Manager directly manages improvement staff within the Performance Improvement team.
This position is part of the Performance Improvement leadership team as well as the Quality and Performance Improvement leadership team. The Manager is responsible for developing and achieving organization wide and discretely measurable and sustainable change under the direction of health system and cpmV leadership. The purpose of this role is to lead the development of a culture of continuous improvement within the organization, through oversight, management and coaching of PI team members who deliver improvement initiatives, expert advice, facilitation, coaching, and guidance.

Develops and manages the Performance Improvement structures across the organization. Responsible for multiple identified high value transformational improvement programs and projects, utilizing improvement science practices. Ensures performance improvement resources are appropriately aligned and deployed supporting the needs in the organization.

Maintains an active improvement portfolio in the form of leading the most complex initiatives and supervising other team members in less complex work.

Strategically assesses the effectiveness of current performance improvement programs/value streams in achieving organization objectives. Analyses trending of data related to initiatives, best practices, and benchmarks. Develops recommendations for modifications to align to strategy and business goals.

Determines and implements metrics that assess and monitor the effectiveness of ongoing performance improvement programs and initiatives.

Supports the development and integration of new and /or existing programs, policies and procedures to ensure that programs support internal improvement capacity at all levels (e.g. Improvement forums, daily management system adjustment etc).

Designs, establishes, and maintains an organizational structure and staffing to effectively accomplish the organization's goals and objectives; recruits, employs, trains, supervises, and evaluates staff. Develops and promotes performance improvement philosophies, strategies, and policies. Directs and oversees the design and implementation of projects, initiatives, and services that are responsive to needs and objectives of the institution.

Develops and maintains collaborative and cross-functional relationships. Provides leadership and consultation to hospital management on high-impact issues, providing education in the area of performance improvement to departments ensuring alignment with organizational True North and strengthens PQMS across the enterprise. Represents performance Improvement function and serves as internal consult for relevant organizational committees.

Participates in the development and implementation of operating budgets and management decision making of overall resource requirements (e.g. people, systems, and equipment). Demonstrates problem solving, leadership, conflict management, and team building skills in order to ensure a productive work environment and achievement of goals.

Leads the performance improvement strategy deployment cycle including the development and deployment of goals, and the check/adjust process.

Performs management functions by interviewing and hiring staff members; providing or arranging for training for subordinates; evaluating performance; and recommending or initiating personnel actions such as promotions, transfers, merit salary increases, or disciplinary action in order to ensure adequate and competent staffing as well as initiating or recommending responses to employee grievances.
Minimum Qualifications Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities as well as possession of any required licenses or certifications is qualifying.
Education: Bachelor's degree in a work-related discipline/field from an accredited college or university
Experience: Seven (7) years of progressively responsible and directly related work experience
License/Certification: None required

Expertise in Lean, Toyota Production System (TPS), Just-Time (JIT), Six Sigma, and/or Flow Manufacturing techniques.

Expertise in the planning and facilitation of improvement workshops. Expertise in applying a variety of Lean methods, such as Value Stream Mapping, 5S, Production Preparation Process (3P).

Expertise in coaching on the development and implementation of Lean methods and daily management systems.

Experience in both managing the work of and developing the capability of professional staff focused on improvement.

Ability to mediate and resolve complex problems and issues.

Ability to plan, organize, prioritize, work independently, meet deadlines and deliver projects to agreed scopes.

Ability to perform business analytics, including data manipulation, reporting and analysis and able to present this to audience so they are able to understand the findings.

Ability to coach and train staff at all levels within an organization on apply improvement science principles.
